10 Puppies from GUN DOG Readers

To paraphrase Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, "They're the stuff that dreams are made of."  True, that. For many of us puppies ARE the stuff of which dreams, and yes, sometimes nightmares, are made.

Puppies are cute - well, most of the time, anyway. This is by design, of course. Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, realized that puppies needed to be cute in order to survive...like, for example, when they pee on the brand new living room carpet, or decide to devour your best pair of hunting boots  `and you don't discover this until nothing remains but the laces.

But cuteness usually wins out, as illustrated here. Once again we've assembled the "best of the best" of reader submissions, showcasing their new pride-and-joys. Check 'em out!

"So that's what I'm going to be doing!" Nine-week old chocolate Lab Katie is owned by Steve Reider of Fairfield, California.

Arrow is one sharp pup! This 5-month-old American cocker spaniel is owned by Diane Travis and Gail Workman of San Clemente, California.

Avid waterfowler Kevin Noorda claims that hunting with General, his 11-month-old Deutsch Drahthaar, is pure joy.

Is eight really enough? This litter of springer spaniels could be neither more attractive nor more alert... so much that the breeders Lyn and Debbie Swarthout decided to keep two of the pups for themselves.

It doesn't get any better than this! On point is 7-week-old French Brittany Fancee de Plum Creek, owned by Bill and Kathy Dillon. Photo by Ken Hupila, Finn Bay Photography.

Getting right to the point! Twelve-week-old GSP Hanz is pointing a pheasant wing on his first day home in Oconomwoc, Wisconsin, with his owners, Chad and Tanya Reynen.

Pictured here with her favorite pheasant chew toy is Morgan, a 4-month old Brittany owned by Daniel Hinkle and Jessica Feld of Kansas City, Kansas.

Planning to do great...in the lower 48! Bill Martin of Eagle River, Alaska, says he is looking forward to hunting in "the lower 48" this year with his Llewellin setter, Tigger.

Strike a pose! Six-month-old Cedar is a small Munsterlander owned by Jeff Mizenko and Brenda Velasco of Summerset, South Dakota.

Ho-Hum! We're bored! Let's hunt!" German wirehaired pointers Tag, Baron and Etta are willing, able and ready for a day afield. Photo submitted by Dorothy A. Voss, Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
