The folks at Wildlife Management Technologies have a fascinating product -- the Surrogator, a self-contained unit that will feed, house and water up to 125 day-old quail chicks or 65 pheasant chicks for the first five weeks of their life. It provides everything their mother would provide, and more -- complete protection from predators and the elements.
According to their website, customers have successfully released over a million quail with this product. The Surrogator is primarily intended for those who own shooting preserves, but anyone who owns land and likes to hunt quail should take a hard look at this product. Birds raised in a Surrogator have limited human contact, which means hard flushes. This strikes me as an excellent tool for the serious bird dog trainer.
