Gun Dog 2013 Holiday Gift Guide

Gun Dog 2013 Holiday Gift Guide

If you're having trouble filling the stocking of the bird hunter in your family, take a second to check out our 2013 Holiday Gift Guide. We've got everything a dog lover or bird shooter could want this season, and we're sure it will put some cheer on the face of any avid GUN DOG reader. If your hunter is in line for a shotgun, take a look at the latest and greatest from Remington and Weatherby. Just purchased a new gun dog? Consider training the pooch with an e-collar from DT Systems or SportDOG. And if your shooter wants a great patterning waterfowl load, put a case of Blind Side under the tree.

Winchester Blind Side

Shred the skies with faster-than-ever hex-shaped Winchester Blind Side shot shells. Bumping muzzle velocity up from 1,400 fps to almost 1,700 fps, Winchester's new high velocity shells make for more forgiving leads and greater per-pellet impact energy, resulting in more ducks and geese for your trusty Lab to retrieve. As always, a Diamond Cut wad launches shot consistently for nice even patterns, and Drylok construction minimizes duds.

Price: $24-27

SportDOG Upland Hunter SD-1875

SportDOG combines the basic neck and constant e-collar stimulation features with a remotely activated beeper/locator in the Upland Hunter SD-1875. With seven levels of stimulation, the SD-1875 also has vibration and nine selectable tones, up to a 1-mile range, a waterproof, audible beeper (up to 500 yards), and an add-on collar receiver option for training multiple dogs from one transmitter.

Price: $385

Realtree Max-4

Is there a serious waterfowler out there who doesn't utilize this pattern? Realtree Max-4 includes elements of cattails, common grains, cornstalks, sunflowers, oak and maple leaves, cedar and oak limbs and other plant life to help you blend into a wide variety of environments.

DT Systems RAPT 1400

The DT Systems RAPT 1400 transmitter can be operated with one hand in three different ways to give any trainer greater speed in delivering stimulation. With the 'Knuckle Grip, ' the transmitter is attached to the back of the hand; in the 'Palm Grip, ' the transmitter is held like a stopwatch to give immediate access; and the 'Pistol Grip ' allows one thumb and the trigger finger to push transmitter buttons. There are 16 levels of stimulation for 'nick ' and 'continuous ' with each controlled by an adjustable 'jump ' for instant power increase. A 'vibration ' with audible tone feature is also part of the system. The transmitter is waterproof and will float if accidentally dropped overboard. The collar battery is a rechargeable NiMH with an LED read out indicating charge status.

Price: $230

Dokken's Deadfowl Trainer

Available in 33 different birds, Dokken's DeadFowl Trainers are made with a firm foam body and hard plastic head and feet, designed to reproduce the appearance, feel and weight of a real gamebird. Because of the hard head and feet, dogs are encouraged to grasp any DFT by its softer foam body. All DFTs will absorb commercially manufactured wild bird scent for another training advantage. Available in a variety of waterfowl and upland birds.

Price: $30-50

Remington Versa Max Sportsman

The Remington Versa Max Sportsman features the same seven port-gas system as the original Versa Max, which operates in stages according to shell length, and gives the gun a between-the-hands balance. Other nice touches include a mil-spec anodized aluminum receiver for weight reduction; a synthetic stock with a SuperCell recoil pad; a hammer-forged barrel with stepped ventilated rib sling studs for ease of carry and over-sized safety. Initial offerings include a 28-inch black synthetic version and a 28-inch Mossy Oak Duck Blind full camo version, along with 26-inch black synthetic and 26-inch Realtree AP fully-camouflaged versions.

Weatherby SA-08 28-Gauge

We would never suggest a 28-gauge as a primary duck gun for adults, but after obliterating dozens of skeet with the Weatherby SA-08, we know it would be really fun for close up, in the decoys gunning, or for an advanced shooter in a good flooded timber hole. This auto-loader features Weatherby's unique dual-valve system, which has undergone a torturous testing program, pushing more than 6,000 rounds through the gun. At 5.5 pounds, it's a real pleasure to carry all day as opposed to a full-framed 8-pound 12-gauge.

Price: $849

Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Blades

All-new Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Blades was designed to fill in the missing link of pure grass elements common in today's field-edge and pothole hunting. It features a precise arrangement of wind-blown, broken and bent grass blades, overlaying a background of lesser or dead grass thatch.

LaCrosse Alphaburly Pro

No limits, extended magazine tubes and lots of white birds — spring snow goose season is a great time to be in the blind. But field conditions are usually at their worst, and there's nothing more valuable than a good knee boot for sludging through muddy cornfields. The LaCrosse Alphaburly Sport Pro is equipped with Ankle-Fit technology, making sure your feet stay dry and secured. The outsole features superior traction with no mud build-up, so no more skating across the wet muck.

Price: $130-$170

Cabela's One-Strap Waders

We have all pounded a wader strap buckle into our shoulder with our gun butt, so we're big fans of Cabela's One-Strap waders, which feature an ambidextrous strap to fit your off-hand shoulder. It makes swinging on speeding teal much easier — trust us. The waders are constructed of 5mm neoprene and Armor-Flex, which won't restrict movement. Reinforced knees and 1,200-gram Thinsulate Ultra boots will keep you comfy.

Price: $230

Remington Pro Field Training Bag

The new Remington field training bag is exactly what every hunting enthusiast needs. It has a padded, detachable shoulder strap, safety orange locator flag and can float on water. Complete with eight outside mesh storage pockets, five internal compartments and removeable divider, this bag is the perfect training companion. Price: $45
