VIDEO: Teaching Your Gun Dog “Whoa”

“Whoa” is perhaps the most important command that your gun dog will learn. Here’s a training process designed to help you in your attempt at teaching your gun dog “whoa”

    Totally Shit !

Does'nt ever work here in Finland where whe have to practice with the real forrest birds. We have to practice with capercaillie, black grouse and willow pharmigan. your dog have to flush when you tell him or her to do to that and then stay !!!!!

Used this technique many times. Works great. Easy to use and dogs were very responsive. Harold Adams gives common sense, easy to use methods. One of my favorite trainers.

    Jaska,

First off, watch the language dude. My 6 year old read that!

Secondly, I don't think you understand the purpose for this command. Go onto Youtube and watch this command in action.

Cheers Gundog Mag, I'm needing some help with my GSP on this one!

  • suzanna

want to tie it around his fat ass and say squeel like a pig fat man. ha ha

  • Glenn Phiips

it all makes sense to me – seems like sound advice. I'm going to try it on my young Brittany who is having troubles whoa-ing

  • Doug Snoddon

If you dont like what your reading or how it;s done then dont use it. These people put alot of time into traing dogs any hunter can respect that lets give them some respect.

Does anyone know about whoa training with a post in ground?

  • John Faigh

I have been training dogs for 40 yrs 20 yrs professionally. I respect Mr. Adams method but developed a simpler method using a Gentle Leader and Positive re-enforcement. I can teach a dog the command "Whoa" in 5 minutes and have them stopping reliably in 20 minutes with a bird under their nose. No pain and compliance method all rewarding.

      John;

Can you tell me what method you use to teach the command "Whoa". Thanks for your time.

I am interested in your method. Can you describe it?

    Hi All,

I just adopted a rescue dog from Aiken, SC. While browsing online looking for help, I found this video. I believe my dog which is a Wire-Haired Fox Terrier (mix) may have been used as a hunting dog. I am not familiar with this behavior and tend to see disciplinary training within him. He also doesn't really bark and relieves himself along the perimeter of my property. He is calm and social, however when trying to get him into the house; he stops right at the door and doesn't budge. Even bows his head down while standing and doesn't move, Please advise.

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments about my situation? Recommendations on websites I should visit would be greatly appreciated. I was looking to learn the commands that my dog may have been taught so I could continue to use them and help him to adjust properly within this new family home environment . With many thanks, Sandy
